1987 was the second year that the Nugget was used on the Perth Mint's gold coins, the series had gold nuggets as the theme in 1986,1987,1988 only with each of the four sizes carrying a picture of a different famous gold nugget.
The famous "Golden Aussie" nugget came in at 267.5 oz was found by Jack Bray in the year of his Golden Wedding Anniversary, 1980, features in the design.
Only available as part of 2 & 4 coin sets when originally issued, these can sometimes be found individually.

These coins are the only major legal tender, pure gold coins to change their design each year. This feature and their limited annual mintages give them potential for numismatic appreciation over time.
All coins are legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965 and bear an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the monetary denomination on the obverse .
