| To celebrate 60 years since the end of the Second World War the Royal
Australian Mint released their 2005 circulating coin design and annual year sets at the Australian
War Memorial, launched by Chairman of the Memorial Council, Major General Adrian Clunies-Ross. The commemorative design produced for the Royal Australian Mint's 2005 $1 coin is entitled "Peace" capturing the joy and spontaneity of one of Australia's most iconic images, the "dancing man", taken during victory celebrations at the end of the Second World War. |

| The Memorial's Principal Historian, Dr Peter Stanley, worked closely
with the Mint's designers to develop the coin using photographs from their collection. "We
were conscious that these coins would bring into every Australian's hands what the Second World
War meant to those who lived through the most tumultuous years in the nation's history. They will
be a tangible reminder of the emotions the war's end aroused." |
