Australian $1 Coins
Issued: 1984 - Present
On May 14th 1984, an aluminum-bronze coin showing a young profile of Queen Elizabeth designed by
Arnold Machin, was introduced to replace dollar notes. It proved to be a one-year type as a new
effigy with a more pronounced crown, designed by Raphael Maklouf, was introduced in 1985. This,
in turn was replaced by a mature portrait of the Queen, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, on a
silver proof in 1998 and on circulation coins in 1999.
This one of the fastest growing and popular areas of collecting, with many of the issues
achieving great gains in price.
Collectors of this series should note that several packaging varieties exist, and should
seriously consider if a coin is rare for its packaging or its actual numbers struck. Another
important consideration is the difference between coins from Mint sets and those struck for
circulation. Coins from Mint Sets have been struck at higher pressures with more carefully
prepared dies that have been lightly polished and much more care is taken in the handling during
manufacture therefore presenting a superior end product.
Prices quoted in catalogues are for the Mint Set or packaged products that are untoned, if coin
is from a mint roll or toned reduce price accordingly.
Do not be suckered in by someone telling you that toning is normal for that year or issue and
asking full price, you must not accept this as the catalogue price is for perfect untoned coins,
anything less than that reduces price.
Coins with the denomination on the obverse will not be listed here, to me they are not part of
this series, but an entirely new one which I intend on having nothing to do with.

- [1] Mint Set numbers include Baby Sets, same coins different
packaging.
- [2] 5 Coin Set released to collectors. The RAM maintains coins in
this set are re strikes, thus are an additional amount to earlier figures.
- [3] 2000 Anzac coin has no mintmark and is dated 2000, released in
a joint issue by the RAM and Australia Post.
- [4] Includes coins made for 3 coin Uncirculated sets and 20 coin
Uncirculated set as well as Baby sets.

Postal Numismatic Cover. ( PNC )
- [6] The RAM maintains that the PNCs are an additional number to
the mintage given above however there is no mention in the annual reports of any other VC
coins being made. Australia Post say they do not keep such figures and all the other coins
made for PNCs are mentioned elsewhere.
- [7] A "S" mint marked coin , presented in a specially
overprinted folder to VIP's aboard HMAS Sydney for the launch of the coins on 20th May
2000.

"The coin pack was exactly the same as the standard year 2000 'S' mintmark
pack, except for a small inscription across the top of the front panel..... According the
Greg MacDonald's pocket book some 2922 were originally produced in this pack format. this
is correct but according to memory only some 250, maybe max 300 were actually given out at
the launch, the rest returned to the mint and the coins removed from the packs which would
have been destroyed. each of the VIP's attending received one and the mint asked that
each sailor and officer on board receive one...."
- [8] A standard $1 coin but struck using the obverse die for the
10c which is slightly smaller. Estimates of the number in circulation vary from 600 to 6,000.
The figure of 6,000 comes from some decimal researchers who have searched through over 4.5
million $1 coins.
