1915H Australian Silver Florin

The early coins of the series were all minted in London but with the outbreak of World War I the Royal Mint found itself unable to meet the demand for Australian coinage in addition to its other commitments thus some of the 1914 issue and most of the 1915 issue were sub-contracted to Heaton & Sons of Birmingham. The Heaton mint produced 60% of the 1915 issue. The Birmingham coins can be identified by the mintmark H under the date on the reverse.

Points to consider when grading the reverse are:
  • the Emu's back feathers;
  • the shoulder and haunches of the kangaroo;
  • the head of the emu;
  • the point of the Federation star;
  • the sharpness of details on the denticles, lettering, scroll and shield;
  • the rim for dents and nicks;
  • A weak strike will show in the grass and the shield, the Emu's back, Advance Australia and the centre top of the shield.
