Australian Florins2004 Royal Visit 50th Anniversary Florin.999 Silver |
|||||||||||||||
| Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's historic 1954 visit to Australia, the first by a reigning Monarch, was celebrated with the issue of a commemorative florin, one of only four produced in Australia between 1927 and 1954. The coin's unusual reverse, by William Leslie Bowles, depicted a British lion and Australian kangaroo standing side by side. | |||||||||||||||

This special commemorative coin features a reproduction of the 1954 florin design on its reverse. Unlike the original coin however, both animals are spectacularly illuminated in 24-carat gold. As well as the words AUSTRALIAN FLORIN, the reverse includes the dates 1954 2004 and Bowles' initials. Issued as Australian legal tender, the coin portrays Ian Rank-Broadley's effigy of Her Majesty on the obverse. The effigy is also wonderfully gilded in 24-carat gold.
